In some cases it will not ever occur to someone who crafts as a hobby that their talents could be useful on a professional level. The business side of crafting can be extremely rewarding and fulfilling, but from a distance it may seem daunting. That's where Packaging Your Crafts (Lark Crafts, 2014) by Viola E. Sutanto and How to Show & Sell Your Crafts (St. Martin's Press, 2014) by Torie Jayne come in.

Both books are full of the indispensable wisdom of award-winning and seasoned professionals in the field of crafts that will show you what an opportunity craft business can be. Between the two books, you will have more confidence in your potential as a professional crafter than you know what to do with.

Two CraftStylish members who leave a comment here by midnight on May 27th will receive copies of both books. Good luck!

NatureCrafter writes: I have loved crafting all my life but I find the ones in which I use items from Nature most rewarding to me. I began by creating scenes in minature using dried flowers, pinecones, twigs, moss ect. and small rustic cottages in landscape settings in different seasons of the year. The end product became tabletop scenes and Welcome wreaths. Later I moved to the Carribbean to live and work for 6 years. There I switched to foraging items found on the seashore and in the jungle and designed earrings, spice baskets, rasta rocks and Christmas wreaths and decorations. I found that marketing my crafts proved more difficult than I thought. The crafts I design are loved by some but they are not as mainstream as other design styles. The other aspect is if this to be a business venture then I need maintain a steady profit....unfortunately my results to date have been more of a labor of love. You know what I mean!

I am now designing minature and fairy gardens and Mosaics with natural materials. I believe the areas I am exploring have promise but I believe these books might just get me where I have not managed to get on my own. Either way they would be throughly enjoyed...

Infinity6361 writes: I would so love to have these books. I was in a relationship with a person for three years. Make a long story short. He destroyed all my crafting inventory, books, and reference material. I am disabled and I wanted to create items to sell to help with my expenses. I have an Etsy account but just don't know how about getting things started and how to cost out some of my items. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to replenish or restart my reference materials for my crafting business.

Andzie writes: I am always looking for ideas on crafts to make. I was blessed earlier this year and received a ton of fabric (filled the back of a mini-van and a suburban). I did share as it was more than I would have been able to use. Having these books would really help in using this stash and possibly making money from them. :-)

BornToCraft writes: I just wanted to add. If I don't win these wonderful books, I want to thank you for the idea. However the idea won't help me with knowledge. So please, if I do not win these book, I ask that you may give me advice. Could you see it in heart to lead me in the right direction, and maybe tell me what books I could check out of my library, or where I could go on the Internet to get my business going, and going in the right direction. I'll probably need to borrow some money to get this business off the ground and I'm hoping that I can keep it going and not lose the money that I borrow. My fear has always been, a fear of failure. I'm already at the bottom, the only way I can go any further down, would be to borrow money and lose that.
I now feel so energized, after having been in a deep depression for so long. I know this has to be the answer for me. I'm so excited, and I have faith that you will give me the help that I need. If not through these books, then information in a letter, letting me know everything I need to do, to have a successful business.
Thank You Very Much.
Yours Truely, BornToCraft

BornToCraft writes: Crafting has always been a way of life for me. I was never wealthy, however I have always loved beautiful, expensive things. My way of getting those things were to make them myself. I always had the apartment of my dreams, because I was able to make all my own nicnacs, wallhangings, picture frame, woodworking projects, I once made a rope ladder with steps made of wood. You name it, I made it, and they always came out beautiful, because if it wasn't perfect, I worked it till it was. I have also made many Christmas gifts, and all my own Christmas ornaments when my kids were small. So as you can see, all my life I have been crafting. I'm now a lot older, and in bad financial trouble. I'm no longer able to support, and I'm very down because of this. I no longer have a home of my own, and have to stay with whoever is willing to take me in for a period of time. I would love to be able to do something I was always afraid to try. Start my own business, making crafts and selling them. I think this add was sent by God, just for me. I've been praying and praying for a way out of my situation, and after reading that you are giving away these books, I Just knew that these books were ment for me, and this was Gods answer to my prayers. Thank God for putting people like you in this world, to answer the prayers of people like me.
If you were to give me these books, I believe it would change my life.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.

BornToCraft writes: I've always wanted to make crafts my life's work. At the moment I'm living on SSI & SSDI. My monthly allotment is only $760.
I was forced to stop working after I was hit by a car, walking across the street, on my way home from work one day. I used to work 70hr weeks, I was a waitress. After being forced to stop working, due to the fact that I have major pain running throughout my entire body, I found myself in big trouble. I now have no way to make a living. Even if I were able to do a little work here and there to help afford a roof over my head, they told me that they will deduct whatever amount of money I make from what they give me each month, so my working will not even help me put a roof over my head, because they will take back from me whatever amount I make, and if I am able to make more than $760., I will also loose my medical coverage. There's no way I can afford to loose that. I was used to working every waking hour, and I was used to not having to rely on anyone but myself for my needs. Not being able to work and make my own way in life, has been causing me much psychological pain as well as the physical pain I have to deal with on a daily basis.
My family has been telling me that I should go into business for myself, making artwork or crafts, or even doing interior design work. I would be able to work at my own pace, only when I'm feeling up to it, and I have a feeling that by doing what I love, and just knowing I could now take control of my life again, and again work to support myself and not have to rely on others, I think that would go a long way to helping feel better not only mentally, but also physically and in turn I think I would be able to work more often. I have always had a knack for the arts and crafts. My family have always told me that I make very beautiful things. I never thought people would want to pay for my work. It was a long time before I realized that most people don't have the arts and crafting abilities that I have.
These books could be the answer to my prayers, they could be just what I need to start my own business making crafts. This could be the opportunity I needed to get back on my feet, and to no longer have to rely on the government for all my needs. This is the push I need to start feeling better about myself, and get myself out of this rut I've been in. Everything seemed so hopeless before. This add has given me the inner strength to give myself that push I needed. It has shown me that there is alway hope for the future. Thank you for that.
Thank you for taking the time to read my comment. I'm sorry for the unusually long length of it.

I am on a very fixed income and believe books like this could update and give me an edge on how branding and merchandising correctly could enhance the value of the items I make. I certainly understand the value of branding after having taking a couple of courses in college a few years ago.

coolfurniturelady writes: I manage a small community gallery with a mix of fine artists and crafters displaying and selling their work. Most of the fine artists are selling in other galleries, but the crafters need a boost to treat their art as any other business. The few volunteers just can't do all the marketing and bring all the feet through the door for them. We're starting some small business classes next week and are building a library of reference materials. The classes will concentrate on building business plans, marketing, and accounting - the bain of artists. These books will go a long way to help these artists understand that putting a few trinkets on a shelf, will not (by themselves) bring them the desired results.

Thank you for sharing this wisdom.

regina918 writes: I am right on the edge of putting my work out there. There's always that nagging fear that my work isn't good enough, when I know it is. I never brag about myself unless it's about my craft. I've been sewing for over 40 years (I'm 52) since I was 10 years old actually and my work is impeccable and I cheat myself every time by NOT putting it out there. Maybe something in these books will spur the courage I know I have. Have a great weekend everyone!! :-))
