I used all splitstitch to decorate this shirt. I made the stitches small, less than 1/4 inch, and followed the curves of the pattern for the fill. Splitstitch is great for clothing since it's such a sturdy stitch. Other great stitches for stitching on stretch are a tight chainstitch and stemstitch.

Once you've finished stitching, trim the excess stabilizer from around your stitching. If you're using a tear-away or cut-away interfacing, carefully remove it at this point.

If you use a water-soluble stabilizer:

Rinse the shirt in cool water to dissolve the remaining interfacing.

Once you've finished stitching and removed all the stabilizer, you'll want to wash your shirt to remove any extra stabilizer residue and other dirt that may be on your finished project. The first time I wash a finished shirt, I wash it by hand in cool water just to make sure the stitches stay tight. After that, I wash the shirt in the washing machine with my delicates.

Now that you've washed your shirt, you're ready to show off your crafty work to the world!

fatewineroses writes: Erika, I love the design but definitely appreciate the tips on embroidering on stretchy fabric. The fabric I found at home to use is one of my old camisoles.

Thanks so much!

luluvision writes: this looks great! I'm slowly getting into embroidery after successfully doing a shirt for my daughter. I have the water soluble stabilizer (haven't used it yet) but it looks a lot thicker than the one pictured here. Do you have a link to the one you used? Or an exact name? Thanks!
