Cool yarn alert: Bernat's Glow in the Dark...well, it does what its name says!

As I was wandering around Michael's last week, this yarn jumped out at me, and I had to take it home: Bernat Glow in the Dark. Even though I did not know what I was going to do with it (and my rule #1 of not being a hoarder is, "Don't buy it if you don't know why you need it"), I was overcome by the yarn technology and the kid in me had to see if it really worked! I bought one skein to test out and it really does glow—if you put the yarn under a lamp for about 5 minutes, it will glow for at least 5 minutes (some users have said theirs glowed for 20 minutes, but that seems to be the upward limit). I think that's pretty nifty and even though I probably won't get around to it this Halloween, I'm sure I will find some use for it. I really like the idea of using it in an intarsia pattern, or to make a spooky glowing spider web.

Glow in the Dark comes in a few pastel colors, so I think it would also be great for a nighttime stuffed kid's toy—they'll probably fall asleep by the time it stops glowing. You do sacrifice a bit of softness for the glow...but who cares? Here's a link to all of the things that Ravelry members have made with it (you'll have to become a member to see this link) and here's Bernat's free pattern gallery.

LindaPermann writes: MsIrene- that is great! I still haven't gotten around to using it, but I still go in the closet to look at it sometimes (hahah!). Stocking up while it's on clearance is a good idea since one never knows if they yarn company will bring it back next year- thanks for the heads up!

MsIrene05 writes: Hello, I just finished using this yarn, making the jack-o-lantern pattern from the Bernat booklet. I am a very non-experienced knitter, but I must say, not only with this the first real fun project I got myself into, but it came out extremely. I was very pleasantly surprised, as well as my family (we kept holding it under the light and taking it into the closet). Shipped out just in time for Halloween enjoyment for my youngest grandson.
I know that right now, Michael's has this yarn on clearance, so I am thinking of picking up more in the white and yellow and finding a child sweater with a star pattern on it.
As I mentioned, I am not a knitter (a crocheter first and foremost), but this yarn was very easy to work with and worked up very nicely. I will most definetly use this again, and yes, I hope they return with it for next year.
