Just in Time for Halloween: Yarn that Glows!
comments (4) October 16th, 2008As I was wandering around Michael's last week, this yarn jumped out at me, and I had to take it home: Bernat Glow in the Dark. Even though I did not know what I was going to do with it (and my rule #1 of not being a hoarder is, "Don't buy it if you don't know why you need it"), I was overcome by the yarn technology and the kid in me had to see if it really worked! I bought one skein to test out and it really does glow—if you put the yarn under a lamp for about 5 minutes, it will glow for at least 5 minutes (some users have said theirs glowed for 20 minutes, but that seems to be the upward limit). I think that's pretty nifty and even though I probably won't get around to it this Halloween, I'm sure I will find some use for it. I really like the idea of using it in an intarsia pattern, or to make a spooky glowing spider web.
Glow in the Dark comes in a few pastel colors, so I think it would also be great for a nighttime stuffed kid's toy—they'll probably fall asleep by the time it stops glowing. You do sacrifice a bit of softness for the glow...but who cares? Here's a link to all of the things that Ravelry members have made with it (you'll have to become a member to see this link) and here's Bernat's free pattern gallery.

I know that right now, Michael's has this yarn on clearance, so I am thinking of picking up more in the white and yellow and finding a child sweater with a star pattern on it.
As I mentioned, I am not a knitter (a crocheter first and foremost), but this yarn was very easy to work with and worked up very nicely. I will most definetly use this again, and yes, I hope they return with it for next year.
