Selecting yarn was a no-brainer.  I still had giant spools of chenille leftover from an out-of-control ebay adventure.
I dont have high hopes for the chenille, though, because its quite a bit thicker than the recommended.  I have a history of botching my first craft iteration anyways.  This green sport-weight yarn is waiting for that second iteration =)
This is the gauge swatch thing.  Ive never done this before because I didnt understand why it was necessary, but I guess for clothes its kind of important =)  My swatch was 1/2 bigger than suggested, so Im going to use the smaller E hook instead for the real thing.
Here I go with the back piece!
After 10 or so rows, I find that its not looking very rectangular and keeps getting bigger.  I guess my efforts to make this thicker yarn play small arent going so well.  I decide to drop 2 stitches.  I dont know if thats kosher, but time is limited and I think itll look okay.
The finished product for week 1!

Progress on this crochet-along.  This is the first time I've done a ___-along, let alone crocheting anything beyond a scarf or baby blanket.  Patterns tend to scare me, so I appreciate all the pictures and explanation.  I hope it goes okay!

LindaPermann writes: it looks great! and it is totally fine to drop a stitch or two if you feel it looks too wide-- just remember next week to drop 1 stitch out of each front side so they are all even(even if you don't, it won't be a big deal). I'm so excited that you are playing along!
