Sew Subversive: Down & Dirty DIY
for the Fabulous Fashionista

By Melissa Rannels, Melissa Alvarado,
and Hope Meng

Are you a style maven who likes to do-it-herself? Thought so. Sew Subversive is a book you will want in your personal library.

The colorful text is full of unexpected uses for old clothes and other textiles as well as thoughtful reworking of your treasured pieces that have become worn or outdated.

The authors are the trio of hip chicas that own San Francisco’s Stitch Lounge, an innovative drop-in sewing studio where you can create in comfort or take a class. Projects included in the book range from a simple pillow cover to a funky patch job to embellishing simple items with trims and topstitching. More advanced projects include turning a T-shirt into a skirt, making a pillowcase into a dress, and finessing an ill-fitting but awesome thrift-store gem into a flattering find.

The authors come at fashion from their own young, unique, and hip perspective. The fearless trio makes this a fun and inspiring read even in-between projects.
