Ever wonder why your favorite pants fit so beautifully? It probably has much to do with the shape of the crotch curve. The good news? It’s easy to identify and copy that special curve, then use it to alter any garment pattern. All you need is a 32-inch flexible ruler, which has an inner lead core so it's bendable, pliable, twistable, and always holds its shape. You can purchase one at www.dressformdesigning.com; www.flexiblerulers.com; and www.joann.com.

Then follow three simple steps:

Step 1: Turn the pants inside out.
Place one pant leg inside the other to reveal the inside crotch curve. Pin to anchor at the waistline so it doesn’t shift. Then, lay the inches side of the flexible ruler along the seamline. Record the front crotch measurement (the distance along the curve from front waist to inseam).

Lay the flexible ruler along the inside seam.

Step 2: Lay the curve on your pattern.
Pin the front and back tissue pieces together along the inseam. Mark the seamline (usually 5/8 inch in from the cutting line) in dotted
red pen. Then align the newly shaped flexible ruler onto the pattern as shown.

Lay the curve created by the ruler onto your pattern.

Step 3: Trace off the curve.
Using a different color pen, mark the new seamline following the inside of the flexible ruler. Finally, measure new seam allowances
from this new seamline and mark.

Mark the seamlines on the tissue paper.
