Online Fabric Shops
June 27th, 2008 in sewing, fashionHere is a list of some (there are so many) of my favorite online fabric retailers!
They have a retail location in Chicago and if you’re ever in town make sure you visit! The fabric I have gotten from them has always been described well online and of good quality. For my friend Athena’s wedding I was in, we ordered the silk for our dresses from Vogue Fabrics and they were amazing!
I have bought a lot of fabric from them! Great service and quick turn around on delivery. One of my favorite pieces of fabric that I bought from Fabric Mart has to be a beautiful, teal wool crepe I used for a suit jacket some years back. They also carry a great variety of knits in both solids and some great patterns.
One-stop shopping for my “quiltish” fabric needs. This is an amazing site that features lines from designers like Joel Dewberry, Heather Bailey and Amy Butler. Sign up for Quilt Home’s email list for some really awesome specials!
Good old eBay. I love check in here when I need a larger quantity of fabric. You can get assortments too which are pretty fun to work with. It is also important to me to keep up a type of sustainable sewing business/hobby as much as possible so the chance to re-use fabric that has already been made and bought is important to me.
Purl and Repro Depot
These are more cotton fabric focused as well but boy do they have some fun fabrics. Both of these sites are my favorites not only for inspiration but also if I want a trendy or vintage-inspired fabric I can usually find it here.
Does a sewer ever have enough fabric?! Never! I love to have a variety of fabrics around me as I design and sew. The trick is not to have too much fabric. Too much fabric will cause you to forget what you have. Rather, have a good variety of fabrics for the type of sewing that you enjoy. I have a nice, medium size rack in the closet of my sewing room that houses a different type of fabric (cotton, heirloom, specialty, silk, etc.) on each shelf. Every year or so I go through my fabrics and decide what I still like and what I won’t use and give what I won’t use away. Then I get to visit one of my favorite fabric stores! I would love to find some new shops to branch out into so please post your favorite online store so I can take a look!
