Baby blocks in the church nursery.

Baby blocks in the church nursery.

I volunteered to make some soft blocks for our church nursery.  I found the perfect fabric at Wal-Mart before they got rid of the fabric department.  The little blocks already printed on the fabrics were the perfect size, so I didn't have to measure to cut the squares.  I did most of the sewing with my serger, to make sure the seams stayed sewed.  Don't want the little kiddies getting threads stuck in their throats, now do we?

Before sewing the sides together, I used iron-on batting, 1-inch smaller than the size of the fabric square; ironed it on, then used gold thread as an X from corner to corner.  It added a nice sparkle to the finished block, and at the same time, kept the batting from moving (just in case my ironing didn't hold it).  Then I serged the sides together, leaving one side separate.  I then used the sewing machine to sew three of the four remaining seams, plus about half of the last seam - leaving just enough room to turn it right-side out.

Turn the block right-side out, making sure the corners are as square as possible, then just stuff it with polyester fiberfill.  Then hand-stitch the remaining opening, and it's done!  Easy-peasy!! :-)
