Why I Love to Sew
June 13th, 2008 in sewingI had coffee with an amazing lady last week. Deb is thinking about a career change and just wanted to hang out with me for a little while to talk about sewing. We talked a lot about the business side of sewing, how things are in the "industry" and what some options might be for her within it. She asked me if there was any one reason that I choose this career ... So, I thought about it and decided that there is one word that sums up why I sew: opportunity.
I sew because it gives me the opportunity to help people in an area of expertise where I can be useful. I also love the sense of community around sewing and that I can help people to create beautiful things for themselves. For instance, my friend Athena is getting married at the end of the month. We spent the entire weekend making alterations to her beautiful gown right here at home, and we got to spend some great girl time together. Not only did our sewing session help to save her money (alterations are crazy!), but I got to spend some of her last “single days” with her! I’ll be sure to write/post pictures of the wedding in a few weeks!
Another reason that I sew is that it gives me the opportunity to make and give personal gifts. My friend Gena just had an adorable "little"(he was over 10 pounds!) boy, so I made her a blanket bunny just like I had when I was little. I took my time with it and embroidered the beginning phrases of some well-known nursery rhymes.
I also sew because it is through sewing that I can make one-of-a-kind creations. Whether it's a cool purse for a birthday gift or an elegant evening gown, I can make anything in just the right size, color, and style for myself, a specific event, or a beloved friend.
Out of all of these unique opportunities, the most important to me is that sewing gives me the opportunity to learning more about something I love and then share that knowledge with someone else so they can pass it on, too.!
