These ornaments also look cute tied to packages, dangling from stockings, or decorating a pine garland.
There are so many possibilities for decorating the felt frames: You can sew on or glue on embellishments, embroider, use puff paints...
You probably have the materials for this project in your stash right now—its a great way to use up scraps.

If you don't have any tracing templates, you can make one by cutting a circle, oval, or rectangle with a paper cutter or craft punch. Trace this cutout onto a larger piece of cardstock and cut it out with an X-Acto knife.

Trace the template onto felt.

Trace the same template onto a piece of felt. I like to use a fine-point Sharpie for tracing because it makes a distinct line with very little pressure. You can turn the felt over to hide any stray marks later. Or, use a pencil if you prefer.

Draw a second line outside the traced line.

Next, draw a second oval, circle, or rectangle about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch away from the first one—this represents the outside of the photo frame. Feel free to make it wider or narrower as you like.

Cut two same-size pieces of felt, one with an opening.

Average_Jane_Crafter writes: These are fantastic and seem easy! I love the idea of "embellishing to my heart's content," though that could get dangerous ....

And I love Linda's version with the year embroidered on the frame, and the idea of machine stitching - which would be nice if you were looking to crank loads of them out. (but you know me, a total sucker for hand stitching .... ;)

Great tutorial, writing, pictures as usual!

LindaPermann writes: Great tutorial Diane! I made one last night (in the gallery). Since I didn't have any templates, I used a cup for the inner circle, then a clear plastic container for the outer circle (so I could see through it as I traced it to line it up). Now at least I know our hodge podge set of dishes are good for something!
