These ornaments also look cute tied to packages, dangling from stockings, or decorating a pine garland.
There are so many possibilities for decorating the felt frames: You can sew on or glue on embellishments, embroider, use puff paints...
You probably have the materials for this project in your stash right now—its a great way to use up scraps.

Apply a thin line of glue to the inside front of the frame, keeping it away from the edges of the felt—you don't want oozing glue here! Press the top of the frame over the photo.

Tuck a ribbon loop in the top. Add a little more glue if needed.

Make a 3-inch loop of ribbon, and tuck the ends into the top of the inside back of the photo frame, adding a little more glue if needed. Allow the glue to set.

Stitch the sides of the felt together.

Stitch the front and back of the ornament together with a blanket stitch or whipstitch. (Those links take you to Futuregirl's definitive how-tos for both stitches.)

And that's it! Your ornament is ready for hanging.

Average_Jane_Crafter writes: These are fantastic and seem easy! I love the idea of "embellishing to my heart's content," though that could get dangerous ....

And I love Linda's version with the year embroidered on the frame, and the idea of machine stitching - which would be nice if you were looking to crank loads of them out. (but you know me, a total sucker for hand stitching .... ;)

Great tutorial, writing, pictures as usual!

LindaPermann writes: Great tutorial Diane! I made one last night (in the gallery). Since I didn't have any templates, I used a cup for the inner circle, then a clear plastic container for the outer circle (so I could see through it as I traced it to line it up). Now at least I know our hodge podge set of dishes are good for something!
