How to Make Leaf Coasters
comments (4) November 18th, 2008
This super-quick project is perfect for the upcoming holiday season! They are quick to make, will prevent those unsightly rings on your table, and will help people keep their glasses straight!
Supplies:
- Fat quarters of batik fabrics in a variety of seasonal colors
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Seam ripper
- Beads (optional)
On a scrap of paper, draw your leaf pattern piece. It will need to be 1/4 inch wider than your glass base. Cut two leaf pieces from your top batik.
Cut two leaf pieces from your batik.
With a ruler and marking pen, draw a line down the center of one of your leaf pieces. With the two leaf pieces right sides together, sew on this line. Stitch the first 1 inch using a regular stitch length. For the middle section of the leaf, use a 3.5 stitch length. Stitch the last 1 inch of the leaf pieces together using a regular stitch length.
Draw a line down the center of your leaf for stitching.
Open the two leaf pieces so the stitching is in the middle and the leaf parts are folded in half with their wrong sides together. Use the seam ripper to open up the basting section of your stitching (where you sewed with a 3.5 stitch length) to create the opening for the glass.
From one of your other batiks, cut two more leaf pattern pieces. Place these pieces wrong sides together, and pin the leaf pieces with the opening on top of these two bottom pieces. Sew around the coaster completely using a 1/8-inch seam allowance.
Create an opening along your basting stitches and sew right sides together with your bottom leaf pieces.
Cut your corners and turn the leaf right side out. Decorate with beads or embellish with stitching!
Slide your glass bottom into the opening, and you have a coaster as well as a way to keep track of which drink is yours!
