The holidays are a time when family and friends come together, which makes this time of year a great opportunity to reveal that a new family member is on the way. Have you been trying to come up with a special way to drop the news?

We've rounded up three DIY ideas you can use to introduce your soon-to-be daughter or son over the holidays, whether as an in-person announcement at a holiday family event or as a message to relatives who live far away.

1. Funny Family Photo Holiday Cards

Whether you're first-time parents or you have kids, you can definitely capture a family photo that features mom's belly. To draw attention to the "missing" family member, spell out the baby's name or due date in the photo or add a digital overlay.

Additionally, you can choose to hold up a gender-neutral, or if you know the baby's gender, a pink or blue newborn baby pajama or outfit. Or, simply say "We're expecting!" on the photo card. A cute holiday photo card of your family can capture a memory for years to come and is sure to be put up on walls at the homes of your relatives.

2. Gender Reveal Video for Sharing

If you have one or more little ones already, try to incorporate them in some way. Hang a plain stocking for the expected new family member, and place a gender-revealing baby toy or outfit in the stocking. On Christmas morning, a sibling can open the stocking and reveal the baby's gender.

Likewise, if you're at a holiday dinner with a big party of extended relatives, get the whole family involved by giving each family member or friend a guess at the baby's gender. Only those who guessed correctly get a Christmas present, which could contain a Christmas-y sugar cookie with the baby's gender spelled out in icing.

3. Gender and Name Reveal Christmas Gift

Another way to reveal your future bundle of joy over the holidays is to do a gift reveal. You can do this with your immediate family and capture a video to send to relatives. Or, you can do it when you're together with extended family over the holidays. Give grandpa or another family member a small Christmas gift to open from the expecting parents.

This gift will contain the gender of the baby. Then, give a small Christmas gift to grandma or another family member to open in front of everyone. This gift contains the baby's name. Even if your kids and some extended family members know you're expecting, it's still a fun way to share the news officially with friends and family members.

Connecting with Family Over the Holidays

The holiday season is an important time for spending quality time with near and extended family members. It's also about sharing precious time with your kids and spouse away from work and school. Sending out baby announcements is fun over the holidays when most people slow down to focus more on family. A new baby is an excellent Christmas gift in itself, sure to warm the hearts of everyone with whom you gather as a family to celebrate.
