How to Make Cards and Tags with Stripes and Dots
August 6th, 2008 in sewing, patterns & designs, restyle, paper craftsMy mom is one of those people who keeps a shoebox filled with cards for pretty much any occasion you can think of. I am not one of those people. Although I always remember to get a gift for my friends and family, I am usually scrambling around my house looking for something to make a last-minute card with. Here are some quick card and gift tag ideas you can make with things you probably already have lying around the house. Make a bunch of them and you too will be known as someone who is always prepared for that last-minute birthday party! For recycled gift wrap to match, I think packages wrapped up in newspaper and tied with sweet red and white baker’s twine is very smart and stylish.
What You'll Need:
Assorted sizes of cards and tags
Magazines and other paper from the recycling bin
Decoupage glue such as Mod Podge
Small brush
Hole punch
X-Acto knife and cutting mat
Optional: Sewing machine with a leather/vinyl needle and thread color of your choice
1. With an X-Acto knife and cutting mat, cut different-colored strips from magazines. I like them to be free-form strips, so I don’t use a ruler.

2. With a hole punch, punch different-colored circles out of magazine pages.

You can hole punch through several magazine pages at a time to make lots of circles! |
3. Lay your design elements onto a blank card or tags. You can come up with endless designs just using stripes and dots, so be creative! Lay out a sheet of newspaper and brush the back of each piece with a small amount of glue. Smooth each piece onto the card or tag.

4. If needed, cut off excess magazine pieces with an X-Acto knife.

5. After the card has dried, I like to add a little extra element to my cards with machine stitching. Leather/vinyl needles work best for sewing on paper. Make sure to change out the needle before you go back to sewing on fabric!

The finished product! You can really make an endless assortment of patterns using just these simple items!
