One piece layout, that allows use of a lower rib band of a sweater.

Took Cal Patches idea "How to Make Hats from Recycled Sweaters" a bit further, by making mittens from the sweater sleeves, and trimming some polar fleece with the sweater leftovers for coordinating scarves.  You can utilize the lower rib band of a sweater by creating a one-piece pattern as shown--just adjust the depth of it to allow for a fold up hat band.
