That sound you hear is not the siren song to dash yourself upon the rocks, but to march yourself instead up Coney's Island's Surf Ave in this year's Mermaid Parade. If you have never been to this largest of all art parades, what on earth are you waiting for? It is crazy-fun, unbelievably creative, and by the sea--if there were ever a single event that completely summed up what summer is all about--the Mermaid Parade is it.

The day before the big event you'll spy crafty types on the subway with sixteen yards of teal and aqua tulle, a hot glue gun, and a bedazzler plotting artful strategies with their friends on how they are going to pull off a winning costume in twelve hours. Come tomorrow, you can cheer the bleery eyed, but triumphantly adorned mermaids and mermen as they strut their fins down the ave. As a matter of fact Craftstylish editor, Nikki Smith, was just describing her sparkly, turquoise, twenties style costume with matching clamshell flapper hat. Nikki is an incredibly talented seamstress and I made her promise to take plenty of pics of her shimmy along the parade route (to post Monday).

Since 1983, artists from all over NYC and the rest of the country have gathered to craft a oceanic extravaganza by the sea. The parade is followed by the Mermaid Ball and all day there will be be live music, antique cars, and of course a seashore full of craft spectacles to welcome the unofficial beginning of the season, Coney Island style!
