When my daughter's new fleece and knit pants needed to be shortened to fit, I found myself with six tubular pieces of fabric each with one hemmed edge. My daughter has decided to keep three as headbands, and I joined the remaining three to make a nice stretchy beanie for her that perfectly matches all her new winter outfits. If stretches to fit me too, but she's so happy with it, I doubt I'll get much chance to wear it!

With my serger still in the shop, I finished the raw edges with zig zag stitching, and then pinned them the hemmed edges. I sewed the pieces together by topstitching along the hem fold.

Offered the choice of a boxy top or gathered beanie, my daughter chose the latter, so I machined a gathering stitch, pulling the top in to about 2 inches before stitching the hole closed on the inside. Simple, and less than a half hour.
