These custom commissioned shoes were for a woman who is an avid Dale Earnhardt Jr./NASCAR fan. These shoes were my first NASCAR inspired pair. I knew nothing about NASCAR before I started these and learned quite a bit about the sport while trying to brainstorm ideas. I named these "In my dust/Leader of the pack."

In researching Nascar I learned that most race cars don't have speedometers! So on the outside panels I painted oil, fuel and rpm gauges. I couldn't find a NASCAR without Goodyear Tires on them, so I think they are the official tire. Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car # is 88, so I made a signature panel, and sent the shoes with a silver sharpie pen, so when she meets him, he can sign them for her:)

Black Vans are the most difficult to paint! Without the help of guidelines (which you can draw on white Vans) All of the painting is freehand and irreversibly permanent, Actually this 88, tire, and flag(which wraps around) took me over 3 hours to paint!

These panels were so challenging! mainly because the NASCAR logo is so recognizable. If not painted right they would look kinda lame and homemade! I wanted them to look like NASCAR stickers. RACING has never been put in Nascar font anywhere before so I thought that would be cool, so they read NASCAR RACING when worn together.

The KVD style shoes are small and feminine, so I tried to design a shoe that would maximize that quality while featuring Dale Earnhardt Jr. I think I did that with the lone (fully detailed/logo'ed) Dale Jr. car crossing the finish line, and the anonymous "cloud" of cars in his wake, I designed the placement of the cars to mimick NASCAR's distinctive oval track.

Steve Van Doren (of Vans shoes) commissioned these Vans shoes for his Niece as well, She is an avid Dale Earnhardt Jr./NASCAR fan. These shoes were my first NASCAR inspired pair. These shoes were difficult! not only are they black, but the KVD style Vans were quite a challenge as they have very little surface area to work with. I also spent hours researching NASCAR the best I could. I wanted to be sure that the designs were extremely accurate and approprate for a NASCAR fan. I needed to nix my signature skeletal work for this project because NASCAR is a high mortality sport, and there are details logos and other factors that if done wrong would have resulted in a "homemade immitation" type look. I took my time painting these, so altogether they took about 6 to 7 days.
