How to Make a Cat Fascinator
comments (0) February 18th, 2009One of my favorite things about cats it that, like me, they are utterly fascinated by shiny objects. My friends' cat, Max, could spend ages chasing a laser pointer or a piece of ribbon. He would bounce around, run up and down the walls, just basically go nuts! I made this toy with young Max in mind. He would love this thing. . . so shiny with feathers and ribbon and tons of bounce. This thing would drive him mad! In the best way possible, of course. . .
Max, this one's for you.
What you'll need:
- Ribbons of various widths (I used ribbons with a lot of shine)
- Fabric glue
- Feathers
- Glitter pipe cleaners
- A wood dowel (I used a 3/8-inch-diameter dowel painted black)
First, cut your ribbon to various lengths. I cut mine between 28 inches and 36 inches in length. Your widest ribbon will be your feathered ribbon.

First, place a 1-inch length of fabric glue on the end of your widest ribbon. |

Place three feathers onto the glue. |

Fold the ribbon over the feathers. |

Wrap a glitter pipe cleaner tightly around the end of the feathers, over the glue. |
Repeat these steps on the other end of the ribbon.

Your feather-decked ribbon. |
Allow the glue on your feathered ribbon to dry.

Collect all of your ribbons together and tie them onto your dowel using a slip knot. |

Wrap a glitter pipe cleaner on either side of your knot to secure it to your dowel and you're done! |
Now that your fascinator is done, find a cat and get to fascinating!
Shiny!
