LisaHehr writes: I just made one out of modern oilcloth - vinyl - and it is really cute. I dont think I would have bothered if I had realized before hand that the vinyl is not food safe. Just a bit more of a pain to have to line it with wax paper first. *curious, how does wax paper decompose? It would seem silly to use it if its just like plastic that gets thrown away...
Does anyone have any tips for sewing vinyl?? No matter what I tried the thread kept pulling thru the bottom. I tried a ball point and a leather needle and adjusted my tension all over the place and it still didnt sew nice. I also had to sew on a piece of paper to keep the vinyl side from sticking to my machine. I have material cut out for 3 more so would like to figure out what i'm doing wrong before sewing them up :) Thanks.
PS, your book is going on my wish list :)

Being able to make things myself that I could simply toss with my other wash or just wipe off would help me sleep at night. We won't even get into my ticket-stub, old toys, magazine for reference, sentimental hoarding issues!

Thanks for your great ideas! I'd love a book!

janejools writes: It's amazing how great minds work. I use an old supermarket shopping bag when I take my lunch and bottle of water to work. The bag tears and if the cap isn't screwed on to the bottle tight, it leaks.
I wondered if by ironing four bags together so that the meted together and sing two sets of these together with gussets it would make a usable, attractive bag. It was a start. I needed a lining so I attached some plastic self adhesive shelf lining material to the inside and it looked like a tote.

But how would I carry it? Two lengths of fish aquarium tubing with brightly colored seed beads filling the inside and heat sealing the ends to keep in the beads,

On the outside I used rubber stamps with all sorts of inks, fabric paints and glued on beads and findings made it glorious.
Xheck out my fun blog janesjools.com to see. As soon as my husbnd takes ome pix I will be posting the results.

casper7997 writes: When I got my first sewing machine just after my last birthday (it was a gift from my mom), I didn't have money to buy a lot of fabric... I bought a few patterns and while cleaning out the attic I found a huge box of old king size bed sheets, and boxes of my old clothes. My almost 11 year old reclaimed my vintage 80's garb as her own, but the old pillowcases Are living anew as tote bags for the kids, and the sheets (the salvageable bits that weren't stained by age) have gone on to live new life as one article of clothing or another. My sister went through her closet after this and gave me old clothes that she didn't wear anymore that are about to be reconditioned into baby clothes.

i honestly don't understand why crafters and artists wouldn't use reclaimed materials! i've done it for so long that it's just second nature half the time. you have infinitite possibilities, instead of just admittedly lovely but readily available to everyone fabrics available at your local sewing store! and older fabrics are usually such fabulous quality, i adore the texture or old cottons, and the awesome drape of old polyesters like fortrel. it inspires creativity, adds options, saves you money, AND is better for the environment! i'm so excited to see a book specifically geared towards this!

sunnirie writes: I AM THRILLED ABOUT THIS BOOK !! I am on disability & can't afford to buy all of the craft items I want. I turn old things into new items all the time. It is how I am able to make Christmas enjoyable for me. Homemade gifts are wonderful. I start on Christmas gifts and decorations in January.
I don't have a single craft hobby. I do it all.... Because my brain watches for recycle & craft ideas all the time, I carry a journal with me. This way, I don't have to try to remember the ideas. It's so much fun & very rewarding. My 3 year old grandson crafts with me. He has a great imagination. He learns fast & is learning the importance of recycling trash. He hates to be dirty, & hates looking at the "stinky" dump. THE YOUNGER THEY LEARN, THE SOONER OUR WORLD WILL IMPROVE !!!!
We do everything we can to help protect our home,(Earth). I try to be obvious about recycling in front of others,(without preaching). In doing so, I hope to turn them on to it, & show them how easy it really is, & how great it will make them feel. It takes no more time to throw something in a recycle bag or the trash.
"Gampa" & I are working with our grandson. We live in a forested area, & he is learning about nature. On our walks, he picks up trash to bring home. He understands somewhat about recycling, and helps to throw things in the correct container. We tell him that it will be made into something else at a later time. He hates to be messy & dirty, so it wasn't hard to explain the dump to him. He is disgusted with the mess & "stinky" there. He also helps his gampa with the food trash; putting foodstuffs in the mulch pile and turning it into gampa's dream gardening soil.
