Crafty by Nature Entry - Autumn in Vermont in a shadow box
March 29th, 2009 in other crafts, home decorating, memory making, galleryWe moved from Vermont to Texas and I missed the colorful foliage of Autumn back home. I made this shadow box so that I would always have a piece of Vermont with me. The base of the cabin, porch, and chimney are recycled pieces of styrofoam packing blocks. The background is a picture out of a magazine. The cabin exterior and porch roof are doll-house siding. The front door, window frame/sill, and porch railing/posts are pieces of basswood strips and dowels. The chimney stones are pieces of pea gravel from a nearby playground. The masonry on the chimney is kitty litter. The slate for the path on the front and side of the porch is from a Vermont quarry. The tree is made from florist wires bent in half and stuck into a thimble filled with glue. The trunk of the tree is a picture of a tree trunk from a magazine wrapped around the wires. The leaves are maple leaf punchouts from an "autumn leaves" scrapbook paper, which are glued onto the wire branches and strewn about the cabin roof and on the "lawn". The lawn is a scrapbook paper of "grass". The "stones" on the "rock" wall are seeds from a neighborhood tree glued to a strip of cardboard which was painted brown. The door opens on "hinges" made from thin strips of leather lacing. The door handle is made from the same leather. The water bucket I purchased at a craft store. Through the window is a picture of a dining room and through the front door a living room can be seen at the back of the cabin. There is a glass front panel for the shadow box which I removed in order to take the pictures. It was my first attempt at this kind of project and I was pleased with the results.
