Welcomed by Nature: Door Decoration Created by Collected Materials
April 18th, 2009 in other crafts, gifts, home decorating, holidays, galleryI created this by painting a flat foam round brown and then using a glue gun to attach a ribbon (to hang the collage from) as well as items I collected on nature walks or strolls around my Pennsylvania town. I left the collected materials (pinecones, acorns, sweetgum, berries, twigs, etc.) on newspapers to dry for two weeks prior to using them in this project. I put in the larger items first and added smaller items (such as the berries) to cover any "bald spots" or glue drops. I am currently making one using a strip of felted wool (made from a brown heather wool I crocheted and then felted) instead of ribbon. If you wanted to create something similar, you could use sturdy items other than foam as the base (perhaps a round-- or other shape-- cut from a recycled box). I thought it made such a lovely fall/winter door decoration! If you have children (or, in my case, students), you could have them collect materials with you. I showed the different things I collected to my students (who are two-years-old) and we discussed where acorns come from, etc. as a series of science lessons. They loved seeing the finished product!
