A comfy chair, a cup of tea, knitting in hand and my favorite audio selection, there is nothing more satisfying! Although knitting is a chatty, social activity when you are hanging out with friends and family, those solitary sessions listening to your preferred music, the latest podcast or favorite radio station can’t be beat for helping you crank out some meaningful knitting.

Music is a great accompaniment to a knitting session, particularly if having to refer back and forth to a complicated pattern and need to focus. If you are rocking along with a simple bit of knitting, a fun /informative podcast is a great way to add to the knitting experience. Here are a few of my favorite audio delights designed to enhance your knitting experience!

Studies have shown that classical music affects the brain’s organization and abilities. I need all the help I can get in that department so I take advantage of the serotonin boost I get when listening to Mozart and Bach. Tunes from the baroque period with 60 beats per minute are proven to center and calm, promote focused thinking thus facilitating better concentration. This music actually stimulates the left and right sides of the brain simultaneously so you’re operating intellectually and creatively at the same time.

I love instrumental guitar and my favorite is the duo Acoustic Alchemy.  Their music inspires, soothes and motivates me for all types of activities like driving, walking and knitting. Check out some samples of their music.

Don’t underestimate the power of top 40 radio. When you reach a certain age it is important to keep up with the latest pop music. I feel so old when I haven’t a clue who’s the hottest artist. Twirl the dial and see what you come up with!

NPR (National Public Radio) has absolutely the best variety of podcasts with over 617 different titles to choose from! Topics range from news (63) to music (59) and beyond with a variety of esoteric subjects like space (1) and poetry (1). Check out their comprehensive directory to find a podcast to your taste.

Knitting podcasts are a great way to keep up with the latest trends in the knitting world. You can listen from your computer or download the podcast onto your MP# player for your fix while relaxing away from your desk.

  • Knit Picks – Kelly Petkun’s weekly podcast is chock full of knitting wisdom, book reviews and info about the great Knit Picks product line.
  • Lion Brand This surprisingly hip podcast is full of great tips and ideas to take your knitting to the next level. The interviews with industry leaders and cutting edge creative types are awesome.
  • Webs – Online yarn purveyor Webs, produces Ready, Set, Knit weekly.
  • Guido Stein: This is my new favorite podcast. I love this knitting guy’s voice and sense of humor. He offers great interviews, essays, reviews, and weekly updates about knitting in general.
