I just completed these two pieces a couple of months ago and when CraftStylish gave members the ability to post I thought I'd share. I get inspired by lots of texture and I am often drawn to the work of ceramic artists. Because of their medium they can get wonderful layers and depth, which inspired me to try to get the same with fabric. In the first piece, Paraíso, I wanted the depth of layers ceramists achieve with clay for the leaf motif (shown in the detail). I finally opted for several layers of hand dyed felt to build up each of the leaves in the spiral. The leaves in the center of the spiral have fewer layers of felt underneath than those in the outer rings.

During the conception of the second piece, Flor de la Noche, I actually tried to figure out if there was some sculptural medium light weight enough to attach to a quilted fabric background. But I found nothing that I thought worked well for moldability, weight and overall look with the fabric. So, I turned to the local "materiales" hardware store on my corner and found my answer -- a 1/2 inch square metal mesh (like chicken wire but much more sturdy). I used it to make my cactus form then covered it with the fabric shell. Btw, did you guess what the ridges and roots are of the cactus? They are zippers taken from the "name brand" clothes I recycle into my work. You can read more about how that clothing makes its way to Mexico on my site.

If you see anything in my work that you would like to know more about the specifics of a technique, please let me know. I'd love to hear from you and I'm happy to share.
