From Reclaimed Designer Clothing to Fabric Sculpture
comments (2) August 8th, 2009 in galleryI just completed this wall sculpture of "Las Tunas", the fruit of the cactus also known as prickly pear. It's actually quite wide in proportion to its height (51" x 24") which makes it difficult to see the full piece in the CS format. However, you can view larger photos on my site here. Like all my pieces, the fabrics are taken from reclaimed, new, name-brand clothing that is found in the mercados of Mexico. [Read more about how designer fashions make their way to Mexico here.] In this piece for example, I've cut up a red wool dress by Eileen Fisher and a golden-green, linen/silk shirt by Raulph Lauren among others. Also, if your intrested in seeing how parts of this piece were created, like melting fabric over a form to create the nodes of a cactus pad, check out my blog to view the mini-vids here.
I hope you enjoy viewing this piece as much as I enjoyed creating it.
Until the next piece.....
