Winged Victory Barbie Redux on Ebay
September 5th, 2009 in other crafts, restyle, home decorating, galleryThis is the altered Barbie (R) Art Doll I made for the Trisha Anders' Barbie Redux challenge and exhibition at 10 Women Gallery, Venice CA over the month of August. The challenge was in celebration of Barbie's 50th Anniversary.
The Winged Victory is based on the Winged Victory of Samothrace, now housed in the Louvre. My lady still has her arms and head. She started life as a collectible Beatrix Potter Barbie who suffered an unfortunate accident at home damaging her hair. So she was perfect for a redux project.
Her wings are made of recycled materials including plastic tubing and foam cups. Her hair is paper clay. Her "carved" draperies are plaster bandage. I painted her in a marble faux finish and she is sealed with a matte spray sealer, while her faux granite base is glossy. I love that her head still moves as I discovered by accident towards the end of my build.
I had such a blast making her that I intend to do a whole series of fashion doll redux based on classic sculptures and paintings. My next will be Venus de Milo, and following that I'm considering Botticelli's "Birth of Venus". Perhaps a Ken as "David" will also be in the works. That could give Ken a few surprises.
She is currently on Ebay. I hope she will go to an appreciative home soon.
