Pettiskirt
comments (2) September 16th, 2009 in galleryWith Halloween coming up fast, I've noticed a lot of cute pettiskirts in costume shop windows. I got it in my head that I had to make one for our friend Marianna, who just turned one. I was actually going to make a whole fleet of these for every little girl I know, and Marianna happened to be the first one with a birthday coming up. As it turns out, tulle is kind of annoying to sew. I've always wondered why clothes made of tulle, which is such a cheap material, are always so expensive. Turns out there is a major pain-in-the-butt factor that accounts for the price tag. Sorry, every other little girl I know! Although I have had my eye on this quick 'n' dirty new-sew tu-tu for quite awhile, and I may try to churn out a few of them for the rest if you!
This was also my first attempt at making ruffles. I dug out my old copy of Sew What! Skirts: 16 Simple Styles You Can Make with Fabulous Fabrics, which is a great little instruction book on how to make pattern-free skirts, and I used that as a guide. But mostly I just went at it and kind of figured it out as I went along. I think it came out pretty well for winging it! The nice thing about tulle is that it is very forgiving and hides mistakes well.
Thanks for looking!
