Gold Prada Inspired Shift
comments (0) September 17th, 2009 in galleryThis dress was inspired by the Spring 2009 Prada fashion line. I saw their ads in magazines and I loved the neck detail, how the fabric is gathered at the neck and tied with a bow, and how the fabric seems lightweight and crinkly. I used a gold silk taffeta with a very nice sheen, and matching all purpose thread.
I am very interested in couture sewing techniques, so I created this dress using only hand stitching. I used a pattern block I drafted for myself, and I cut slits on the pattern at the neckline to account for the fullness of the fabric and the gathers. I also widened the waist and the skirt to account for the gathers. I used backstiches at the neckline, at the waist, and for the pockets to add strength and flexibility. I used tiny running stitches to sew the back front and side pieces together because I knew they wouldn't get that much stress. I used pick stiches to sew the bias binding I made for the key hole opening at the neck and for the arm holes. I used the invisible hem stitch to hem the dress. I reinforced the pockets with interfacing so it wouldn't sag. At the waist, I inserted elastic to hold in the waist of the dress.
To create the wrinkles, I simply bunch the dress up when I store it, and I fold and twist it and press.
