Pink Tulle and Silk Edged Skirt
comments (2) September 17th, 2009 in galleryMy inspiration for this skirt (kind of the whole look but the "shirt" in the picture is another dress I'm entering separately, just a skirt with the dress form looked dull) was the Dolce and Gabbana. The whole color palate and black as an edging inspired me to make this skirt. I had so many extra yards of this lovely pink tulle that my mom bought from Wal-Mart to make curtains for my sister's windows. I finally figured out what I was going to do with it all!
I'm not sure how many yards went into this skirt, but it was quite a lot. Again, this skirt is sewn entirely by hand using couture sewing techniques. I first used a french seam to attach the pink tulle together, then I gathered the tulle for the waist. I cut yards and yards of black silk strips and sewed those strips together with running stitches, then I turned the raw edges under and pressed. I pinned the black strips to the tulle hem and I pick stitched the black silk onto the hem of the tulle so the stitches remain almost invisible. I didn't want a line of stitches running the horizon of my hem. Then I used sheer flesh colored knit for the lining (I wanted the effect that I would seem naked through the tulle!). I cut a black strip waistband to my waist size and used interfacing to give it strength and structure. I attached this to the skirt with dense pick stitches, then I attached a waist lining with an overcasting stitch. The waist closes with snap buttons.
fun fact: this dress is made entirely from rectangles!
This dress is so fun to spin around in! As a last touch I found a tube of sheer iridescent beads that I sewed onto the hem of the lining, so no one will know it's there except me, or if I lift my skirt!
