Rock & Roll Micro-Mini Dress
September 22nd, 2009 in sewing, fashion, restyle, gallery"Rock & Roll Micro-Mini Dress"
It all began when I fell in love with an XXL T-shirt that I found at a used record store. I decided that instead of simply altering it to fit me, I would make something entirely new! The main inspiration came from my love of racerback tank tops and micro-mini dresses, but from that point on my imagination took over!
Materials Used:
- XXL T-Shirt - Cotton
- Neckband from T-Shirt
- Black Polka Dot Remnant - Polyester/Silk (?)
- Grey Ribbon
I never use patterns when making garments, and since I never made a racerback style top before I had to get crafty! After separating the front and back pieces of the T-shirt, I pinned the back panel to my dressform and simply sketched out a racerback shape with chalk. To jazz up the dress, I decided to incorporate another fabric on the bust area. Sheer black with tiny white polka dots! I am unsure as to what the material is because I bought it from a thrift store. Next I sewed a strip of grey ribbon on top of where the two fabrics meet, just to add a little contrast. To finish it off, I attached the original neckband from the T-shirt to the front half of the dress. I tried lightly cinching it for a more rounded neckline. All that was left to do was hem up the bottom edge and the racerback!
I am so proud of my creation. Before this project, the only garment ever I made was a pair of pants! My other sewing projects simply consisted of stuffed animals and slight garment alterations. But now I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more clothes making!
