Gucci-inspired suit and coat
comments (2) September 23rd, 2009 in galleryThis suit was inspired by the leather-trimmed suit in the Gucci Fall 2000 collection.
I selected a silk tweed herringbone fabric, and a basic princess-seamed jacket and straight skirt pattern. I modified the skirt pattern to include side front seams. The jacket pattern already had a standing collar and zip front, but I use an exposed zipper finish, which required a slight adjustment. My leather trim is made from strips of ultraleather, which are turned under, stitched and then edge-stitched to the edges and seams of the skirt and jacket. (No raw edges show). The main challenge was keeping the trim even despite the fact that it could not be pressed. This was accomplished by using pre-stitched guidelines. Careful attention was also paid to reducing bulk in enclosed seams, especially for the contrast ultraleather collar on the inside of the jacket. The jacket and skirt are interfaced with silk organza and lined with Rayon Bemberg. I also made a matching coat and pants in the same style.
