Little boy easy pull-on jeans
comments (0) September 29th, 2009 in gallerySince my seven year old son put his knees through five pairs of pants in one week, I decided to make him some new pants. Got a meter of lightweight denim at Fabricland for $9 and a darker, heavier denim for $3.50 a meter.
I used a commercial pattern New Look 6398 which I had bought about two years ago and added the extra knee patches myself.
To make the knee patches, I cut out two rectangles of fabric, then added the embellishment. I then folded over and ironed the top and bottom raw edges of the patch. Then I sewed the patch to the unsewn leg (I guesstimated the location) by top stitching along the top and bottom edges. I then assembled the pants as per the pattern directions. Because I used my Kenmore serger for all seams and the waistband, I had no problem with sewing a double-thickness of denim.
I used my Janome machine for the applique of the mighty machines (first time I've ever done an applique by machine) and it turned out not too bad. I used iron-on SpongeBob SquarePants decals that I found at the dollar store and had kicking around the craft room.
All told, I spent less than $15 for two pairs of pants, and one afternoon of sewing. Plus, you cannot find denim pull on pants in the stores! And my son will only wear pull on pants now. When my son got home from school he said "I love them! I can hardly wait to wear them tomorrow!" which made me feel good. Obviously. :-)
Now he wants me to sew him a stuffed animal.
