Ponoko: Make Your Designs on Demand
comments (2) July 29th, 2008I first heard about Ponoko from my friend Jennifer when they sponsored a jewelry design contest recently. The concept is so intriguing: they transform ideas and images into original pieces, made to your specifications, and sold at the price you set. It's ideal for jewelry design that you don't have facilities to create yourself... and a fantastic outlet for getting your work in front of customers who might not see it otherwise!
From their site:
Armed with nothing more than an idea, professional and hobbyist designers, crafters, hackers and artists can turn their ideas into real products -- and new revenue streams -- using our web commerce and digital make-on-demand services. No upfront costs. No minimum orders. No inventory. Simply click to design, make, sell and deliver your creativity to the world, at your own speed.
One of my favorite pieces I've seen there is this gorgeous, intricate haircomb by schofe, the second-place prize winner. The comb can be cut out of a variety of materials, in any color you like. This custom-made necklace is also a head-turner: the "beads" are designed via an audio file of your choice! Out of the jewelry realm, I also liked this box lamp and this laptop stand.
The Ponoko blog has regular updates about their upcoming contests, featured makers, and inspiring visuals from designers around the world. Browse, shop, or start designing a collection of your own!
