Knitter's New Year resolution
comments (0) December 26th, 2009“A New Year's resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous”, as defined by Wikipedia.
Let’s start with the commitment an individual makes to a project. Well, we have no shortages of these. In drawers, kntting bags, boxes…need I go on…there are those poor unfortunate projects that were all started in good faith. We may have run out of yarn, dropped a few too many stitches, lost the pattern, the gauge is all wrong, decided it wasn’t turning out the way we had envisioned, fill in the blank, never the less they haunt us periodically.
Start by putting them in piles, hope, no hope and hope someone else wants to finish it.
If the project is a lost cause…frog it and reuse the yarn, give it away to someone who might enjoy finishing it, find a complimentary color to add to it. If it is wool, felt it and start an entirely new project with it.
Onto reforming a habit: Stuff, unorganized and too much of it. Let’s start by organizing the equipment.
Gather all your needles and hooks, together and put them in a container (if they are not already). Put tape measures, swatch gauges, darning needles etc together. Place all your loose patterns in a folder. Organize your books and magazines. Separate your yarn stash into type of yarns and then further into color and/or thickness. This last step depends on how much you have stashed. Who are we kidding…it’s a lot. You will be amazed at what you forgot you had.
Lifestyle change: Now that you have collected unfinished projects, books and magazines that just don’t have the appeal you thought they would and of course all that extra yarn, it is time to encourage friends to do the same.
The holidays are over and winter has set in. Gather your friends, wine and cheese and have a Knitters swap. You deserve it. You might even see me there.
Happy New Year!
