Modern Aprons for Hip Kids
comments (0) December 30th, 2009Just over a year ago I opened a small company called MAD Stitches (Make a Difference). It allows me to combine my passion for sewing and volunteering by sewing products, selling them and donating part of the proceeds to different charities. The bulk of what I make and sew is childrens aprons--mainly because I really believe in them. Kids are doing more enrichment activities than ever and their days can be really messy. I first designed this apron with my sewing mentor Nicole Vasbinder of Stitchcraft, in Petaluma. I wanted a modern apron that was cute, but practical. Together, we designed an apron that moms could throw over their daughters clothes in preschool or art class. I quickly started using this apron for my daughter too. It keeps her clean during art activities and she also wears it as an accessory over her clothes. As the year has passed, I have had requests for aprons for tweens and boys. So, here are some pictures of the three types of aprons we make at MAD Stitches: the Modern Day Pinafore, the Cupcake, and the Shop Keeper, part of the proceeds go to different charities. 2008 was aprons and upcycled gloves for Samaritan House, a local family shelter. 2009 is for STaRS, an organization that provides medical treatment in third world countries to children born with cleft lip and palates.
