Beaded Cardigan
comments (0) February 5th, 2010 in galleryThis cardigan was knit from Rowan Magazine 37, “Martha” by Stella Smith. The sweater pattern can be worked with or without beads. Since I adore working with beads when I am knitting (although getting them onto the yarn is not so much fun), that decision was easy.
The yarn I chose was Patons Grace in Azure, and my beads are 6/0-Dark Cobalt Dichro Lnd, purchased at Baubles & Beads.
My beaded Martha has been sitting in pieces in a drawer for years because I could never find buttons that I felt worked with both the yarn and the beads. I have done this in the past, and don’t ever seem to learn that I need to find buttons I love along with my yarn purchase. This contest has provided the motivation to get the job done!
I ended up knitting my buttons by casting on six stitches and working eight rows in stockinette stitch with my yarn. I left myself long yarn tails so I would have enough to gather and sew my knit squares into buttons and finally sew onto my sweater. I can’t believe I haven’t thought of this before. In much the same way that a self-fabric belt and buckle set off a dress, I think self-yarn buttons really work nicely with knit wear and I plan on using this technique in the future.
