Boreal Forest Tote
July 27th, 2008 in sewing, other crafts, fashion, embroidery, galleryI'm entering this in the Omni-Crafter Special category. I used a number of different techniques here. I made the bag flat, then appliqued the stars near the top, birds, then squirrels, deer, moose, and bear further down, trees, amorphous shapes, and fish down at the bottom (note the bear contemplating the fish).
I free-motion embroidered around all the batiqued shapes of the base fabric and around and within the appliques using both variegated thread and metallic threads. I left the edges of the appliques ragged to enhance the boreal forest theme.
The straps outline a large pocket on side 2 of the outside showing a wolf howling at the moon, which lines up with a same-sized pocket inside the bag. The inside of the bag is lined with sturdy upholstery fabric left over from a chair.
This bag should win because it's stylish, practical, and totally my own design, celebrating the Boreal Forests of the world. It's a great bag for fall and winter -- it's oversized so you can carry your shoes in it when you're wearing your boots, whether in the city or in the forest!
