How to sew a waist band??

When making pants, everything usually goes fine until I get to the step of stiching in the ditch to secure the inside of the band to the pants. I use a zipper foot to stich in the ditch from the outside of the pants which works quite well however the inside of the band is never smooth and the stitching, although straight along the waistband on the outside, is never straight on the inside. Any suggestions/tips would be appreciated!
