Felting is one of the oldest methods of fabric making on record, dating back to at least 6,500 BC. It is also one of the simplest forms of fabric, and is very easy to replicate at home. In her newest book The Felted Bag Book, (St. Martin's Griffin, 2010) Susie Johns shows how to turn raw wool fibers into beautiful, durable bags.

There are four basic methods to making felted fabric - wet felting, knit felting, crochet felting, and 'recycled' felting. Each method has its benefits. Johns explains how the different methods of felting work, and gives patterns for some cute projects for each.

The knit and crochet felting techniques require some previous knowledge, but only the basics. If you're looking to broaden your craft horizons into knitting or crochet, felting is a great place to start. Felting hides most of the details of the fabric, so any beginner mistakes will be invisible!

The Felted Bag Book includes 21 projects with detailed instructions, templates, and a few variations as well as over 250 full color photographs.  Felting is a great project for younger crafters in particular because of how simple and fast the projects can be. If you're looking for an afternoon project to make with someone else or by yourself, or you're in the market for a cute new bag, you should definitely check out this book.

To enter, FIRST CHANGE YOUR AVATAR associated with your CraftStylish ID from one of our stock images to one of your own. It can be a picture of you, something you made, or even an illustration. Last month I made heavy weight tote (first time - no pattern) and had been posted on Threads.

Spending time knitting just to felt it doesn't seem like a good use of my time. Last projects were socks and they wouldn't furnish much fabric after felting! Hope I'm one of the lucky ones but sorry to see the rest lose!

BarbaraSki writes: I enjoy working with felted wool - but I usually go to one of the thrift stores and buy wool sweaters, bring them home & felt them. I once made a cool vest from a man's XL sweater. I cut off the sleeves and neck ribbing, & shaped a v-neck. I then took a coordinating yarn and did a blanket stitch on all the raw edges. I've gotten many complements on it. I've also embroidered on a solid and made a little shoulder bag with a zippered closure. Although I'm an experienced knitter, I haven't yet been able to felt something I took so much time knitting.....maybe someday. If I win the book, I may get the courage to do so.
