1745 Travelling Suit (as seen in "Dangerous Liaisons")
comments (0) April 29th, 2010 in galleryThis Travelling suit was created using Janet Arnold's pattern from her book "Patterns of fashion, 1660-1860".
Made from a thick quilted cotton Jacquard, and lined in cotton. I was lucky enough to find a fabric almost exactly as the one described under the illustration in her book. It was originally made from a white quilted satin, which had a lattice design all over, and a floral border at the bottom. The one I found had the flowers worked in with the lattice, but it's soooo lovely all the same!
The sleeves are elbow-length, which would have been worn with long mitts. There is a lovely huge hood, and the interesting part is that the lapel closes at the front almost up to the neck, or can be worn open. The suit is worn over a padded bum roll, and two petticoats, stays, a shift, and I've chosen to wear a thin scarf as well as fingerless gloves.
The hat was a purchased felt base, whose crown I shortened, re-attached, and decorated the brim with antique lace, antique metallic braid, and a coquade.
Pattern or design used: Janet Arnold, from "Patterns of Fashion, 1660 - 1860"
