Ribbon & Rick Rack Brooches

cindy_sews writes: For the ribbon flowers - there really isn't a pattern. I use 1 1/2 inch wide organza or taffeta ribbon - maybe about 15 - 18 inches long. Experiment to see how much fullness you want. I start making a hand gathering stitch down the edge of one of the short ends, continuing along the long edge, and back up the other short edge. I pull up the thread to gather the ribbon into a circle. Turn the flower over to the wrong side and pinch the two short ends together. I use the gathering thread to sew these two ends together. Set aside. Get another piece of ribbon about 8 - 10 inches long. Fold in half length wise. Make the fold off center so it looks like two ribbons. Make the same basting stitches and pull up the threads. Pinch the ends together and stitch the ends together.Knot and cut the thread. Place the smaller flower on the center top of the larger flower. Use the larger flower needle and thread to stitch these two flowers together. If you have enough thread, bring the thread to the top center of the small flower. Add beads or a button to the center. I sew wool felt backs to the flowers. You can add a hair clip or a pin back. If I am going to use it as a pin, I like to use a safety pin so the flower lays flat against the object to which it is pinned.
