Vintage Shabby Chic (waist or Hip) Belt
comments (0) May 17th, 2010 in gallery"The Vintage Shabby Chic Belts" I make are made of jute and very good quality velvet. This gives the belt the shabby chic effect I am looking for. The velvet keeps the belt from coming undone, and therefore no need to make a knot when tying the belt.
The belts are stylish and very comfortable. These belts may be worn on the waist or the hips. That is why I make the jute 5" shorter than the waist measurement and the velvet longer than you would think it should be. I make the velvet a finished length of up to 15 inches on each end of the jute.
All of my designs are different colors and styles, but I usually use crystals and/or pearls, I feel it adds to the vintage look. First I decide what length of jute I want the belt to be around the waist, usually stopping about 5" from going all the way around the waist, and this is where the embellishments will be located later when I have finished machine stitching the belt. The embellishments will also cover most of the seemed area on the belt while adding some sparkle. I usually machine sew the velvet to the ends of the Jute webbing for the front. For the designs on the back of the belt I have used a fabric paint to add sayings or designs. I usually sew a few beads, crystals, brass or silver findings, or (as I did on this belt), a fabric photo was added to the jute surface. Around the photo area on the back portion of the belt I added some hand sewn embellishments to enhance the photo.
Hand sewing the embellishments is a time consuming process, but I enjoy making each "Vintage Shabby Chic Belt" because they are unique and fun to wear when they are completed.
