Materials needed:

  • batting
  • thread
  • scissors
  • sew machine
  • buttons
  • fabric of various but coordinating colors/prints
  • key fob or hook, 2 1/4" long
  • batting
  • thread

Cut batting and fabric  7"x 9", 2 each for the in and outside.  Cut strap: 2 of 1 1/2 " wide x 46 1/2 " long. For the front loop: Cut piece 1/2 " wide x 5" or use purchased binding to same measure.  The strap is reversible but not the purse; unless you want the pockets and key fob on the outside and buttons on the inside. I used scraps sewn together to measure. For the lining, I created 2 pockets a little bit larger than my cell phone and mp3 player. I also made a key attachment for the fob. Cut key fob: 3/4 " x 6",  to match and attached it to the inside, catching the end when I sewed the sides.   Top binding was a  piece of fabric about 2" wide x about 13" around, to fit the top of my purse.  Piece together (front and back are right now separate pieces), in crazy quilt fashion; random or in your favorite style. Sandwich batting in between the fabric, right sides out. Quilt, by machine or hand. I machine quilted in a round robin sort of pattern. (1/4 " seams all the way around). Still working on the outside of the purse; Sew back to front, sides and bottom of the bag,  in 1/4 " seams, wrong sides together. Clip corners. Sew the pockets to right side of the lining, Attach the key fob to the side of the lining. Next, sew  the lining to the outside of the bag, wrong sides together. Sew binding fabric on top of bag, right sides together and ends finished. Clip top of bag if needed. Fold binding up and into the inside, folding the raw edge under. Sew Carefully, you may have to sew both in and outside of purse to make sure you catch binding in all areas.  Create a strap: sew fabric tube wrong side out. Turn to right side. Topstitch. Add buttonholes where it feels comfortable to you, mine are  about 1/2" from ends and 6" from end button hole. To make top loop, since it is so tiny, cut and fold wrong sides together, top stitch. Attach to middle of back of the bag at the top. Attach tiny button to the front. Attach buttons to outside of bag, on both sides and front/back. Take into consideration you may want to fold over or keep longer. I put buttons (1") for both cross body wearing and hip style as well as folded/upright. Attach favorite button, tiny one (4/8") for the top loop and larger one (1&1/2") for the foldover/front decoration.
