The “Favorite Things Tote Bag” is my submission for the eco-chic category. The inspiration for this bag came from my desire to hold onto my daughter's favorite t-shirt. She loves that little bee (and I love the message) and I just could not stand the idea of putting it into the hand me down box. So I decided we needed to put it on a more permanent item so we could keep it longer. I was new to doing piecework and since the shirt was small and had a few stains and holes, I decided cutting it up and using only the good parts would be the best way to go. I asked my younger daughter to contribute to the bag by picking her favorite old shirt from the box. That's where the beige fabric came in. I started the piecing and realized just how flimsy the knit material was going to be, so for some structure I added some pieces of denim from a pair of capri jeans I "outgrew". The side seam from one leg made a great bottom, one of the back pockets made a perfect back pocket on the bag, and the material from the leg made extra sturdy (and comfy) handles. The lining is made from sturdy cotton that came from a box of old fabric I received from a friend. I intended to use this bag on small grocery shopping trips. However, I can barely get a turn at using it. My daughters pass it back and forth and it is used all the time for carrying books, drawing supplies, and once or twice as a purse. I guess we are all drawn to it because it was made from our favorite things. This was my first attempt at recycling fabric, and it was a blast! The experience inspired several projects like using an old set of sheets to make 8 grocery bags and a bag carrier, making piecework curtains for my daughter's room from old shirts, and revamping last year's backpacks with vintage fabrics and buttons for this school year.
