First of all decide what kind of plastic containers you are going to use, so that you will have the exact measurements. Apart the containers and the fabrics you will need some lining, vateline which will help your food stay warm and a zipper. Let’s start
Measure the dimensions of your plastic container and mark them on the fabric.
Leave 2,5 cm allowance for seaming and cut. Put the fabric you have just cut upon the vateline and the lining and cut these two materials as well. So, now you must have a set of three fabrics. Make another one of this set. We will need it for the lid.Decide on the height of your lunch box. I am using two plastic conatiners of the same dimensions, one for my food and one for my salad. Put one above the other and measure the height. Cut the fabric in this measurement. I used one for all four sides but I had some problems. it is better if you cut four different pieces one for each side and then sew them together, allowing every time 2,5 cm for seaming.
Do the same as for the base. Cut pieces of vateline and lining in the same dimensions as your fabric.
Put the base facing down and with all four sides facing wrong side pin the sides to the base and sew loosely with a colored thread.
Now we have to take care of the lining. In every side you must have six pieces of materials. Two fabric, two vateline and two lining. What you do is cut all of them apart the one of two pieces with the lining half cm from the seam you have made with the sewing machine.
Fold the lining piece in half.
Fold it again over the leftovers of the other five materials. Sew by hand. Do the same for all the sides taking care to fold the lining in the same side every time.
Take the piece you had cut for the lit and sew it on the one side of your box.
Fold the open parts of your box so that all sides are even. Open the zipper and sew its one part to the three sides of the box. (If you remember we had sewd the fourth side with the lid).
Sew the other part of the zipper to the three sides of the lid. Now do the same with the leftovers as we did with the box. The only difference now is that the material that must be left longer is the fabric and not the lining. make sure that you sew them under the zip. If you wish you could make a handle. Ready. Bon apetit!
Coming back from my holidays among other things I decided to do is stop eating out. That’s why I made a lunch box using some fabrics bought from e-bay. (Here and here you will find some very nice fabrics 50x50cm for 3-5 euros. They also offer discount for combine shipping). It will not take you more than 2 hours to finish it and it is an opportunity to use some of your leftovers fabrics in clever combination. So, here is how you will do it:
