Tie dye is one of my favorite fabrics.  This dress/jumper is made from tie dyed cotton fabric from Nigeria. The paisley design of the fabric is an example of extreme artistic skill. Only a master artist could get the details so precise.  The fabric looks like it could be batik, but it isn't.  I didn't want this gorgeous tie dye chopped up by a lot of garment seams, so I choose a pattern with a simple design.  This dress/jumper was made using Vogue 8740 (year 1993).  This pattern is out of print, but sometimes comes up for sale on vintage pattern sites.  The patterns I like tend to get discontinued quickly, but that's another story.

Sewing info: When cutting out tie dyed fabric, matching the fabric design (stripes, shapes, etc.) is the most important thing.  There is often some fabric distortion due to the dyeing process, so the design may not be exactly on grain.  However, whether or not you've matched the fabric design is what people will notice, so choose matching the fabric design over cutting your pattern on grain.
