Birthday Greeting Card Crafted from Felt
comments (0) August 13th, 2010 in galleryI'm a greeting card junkie. Normally, I can find a handful of gorgeous letterpress or embellished cards for any occasion - and even no occasion at all! However, the shelves left me disappointed this year as I shopped for my mom's birthday card. So I took matters into my own hands - literally - and created a felt birthday card for my dear mom!
I was happy with the outcome (and so was the recipient!) and wanted to share my creation process with you. Sorry for the lack of step-by-step photos, but I think it's fairly self explanatory.
Step 1: Pink and White Framed Image
The image on the card is a photo of my mom as a little girl (cute, huh?). I scanned the photo into my computer and then printed it on to image transfer paper. This is the same type of paper you would use to make a t-shirt transfer. Next, I used an iron to transfer the image to felt - in this case, Pina Colada Bamboo Felt.
I cut out two frames to adorn the photo. Both of the shapes are from the book, Pretty Little Felts. I scanned and enlarged the shapes on my computer and then printed them on cardstock. Next, I cut the shapes out of the cardstock to create templates. I used the template to trace the shapes onto the felt (Marshmallow Wool Blend Felt and Strawberry Cream Wool Blend Felt) and then carefully cut them out with embroidery scissors. I always cut out shapes slightly inside the traced lines to make sure they don't show in the final product. The image was sandwiched between the pink and white frame and embellished with sequin trim and a vintage button.
Step 2: Taffy and Pink Card Background
First, I cut two rectangles of Strawberry Cream felt to serve as the outer border of the card. A slightly smaller piece of felt was sandwiched between the two rectangles to give stiffness to the card. Nobody wants a floppy birthday card!
Glue was used to sandwich the cardboard between the felt, but you could also use hand-stitching. Some folks swear by hand-stitching, but I'm not ashamed to use glue in my projects! I swear by Felt Glue from Beacon. This stuff is amazing. It dries clear, strong, and doesn't soak through the felt.
Next, I cut two slightly smaller rectangles of Taffy Wool Blend Felt. Rotary pinking blades were used to create a zig-zag edge. I'm a wobbly free-hand embroiderer, so I first traced my message (Birthday Girl) onto tissue paper to use as a guide for embroidery. Simply pin the tissue paper with the traced message onto the felt and embroider away. Once you're done, tear away the tissue paper and your beautiful embroidery is ready to go! Little pink beads were used to dot the i's.
Step 3: Putting It All Together
Now it's time to stack and glue! Glue the embroidered Taffy felt rectangle to the larger Strawberry Cream felt rectangle, which was stiffened in the previous step. I also added a bit of pink velvet ribbon (oh la la!) before gluing down the frame.
I wanted to add an additional message on the back of the card, so once again I used image transfer paper to transfer my message to Bamboo Felt. Be sure to follow the transfer paper instructions and flip the text horizontally before printing. Otherwise, your message will appear backwards after it is ironed on!
After attaching my message, I added little more embellishment for good measure. A handmade envelope would have been icing on the cake, but I ran out of time since I needed to whip up a batch of treats to accompany my hand-made card!
