After making my Modern Mary Poppins tote bag for the challenge, I decided that I wanted a handbag version of the bag for the times when a tote bag just isn't practical. I created the pattern myself, modeling it after a hobo-style bag. Then I patchworked together some of the same upholstery samples I used for my tote bag and cut out my pattern pieces. I gathered the edges of each piece before sewing them together to create a roomier bag. After I sewed together the two lining pieces and the two outer bag pieces, I attached a necktie to each of them. The ties start at one side of the bag, and follow the seam all the way around before attaching again to the beginning, forming the handle. Then I attached the lining and outer sections of the bag, put darts in the edges and covered the top edge with bias tape made from some of the upholstery samples. Then I sewed the edges of the two ties together to finish the handle and added some leftover tie tips from another project as a button closure.

This bag is fully reversible, just like my Modern Mary tote bag. I call it the Modern Mary Poppins because the fabric patterns and bag capacity remind me of Mary Poppin's carpet bag. I love this bag, and have gotten numerous compliments about it. You can expect to see more of these bags in the future!
