I absolutely adore Anthropologie's necklaces, and thought I'd give this delicate yet bold piece a shot.
You'll need:
- 18" of chain
- 150 5-6mm pearls, mine are freshwater from here, but glass would work, too
- A clasp of your liking
- 34 gauge beading wire or fishing line
- Tulle, ribbons, fabric scraps, etc.
- Lower gauge wire or a bit of string
First, you'll need to create five pearl spheres. Use 30 beads and a length of 34 gauge wire for each one. There are some great diagrams
here, so I won't attempt to explain how to bead them myself. Keep in mind that when you first string the pearls, they need to be in the middle of the wire, because you will be using both ends of the wire to create the sphere. Once you are done, tie
the ends together, and cut off the excess wire.

Next, string your spheres onto your length of wire, then add a clasp. I used a toggle clasp, but a lobster or hook clasp will make your necklace adjustable. You may need to use jump rings, depending on the size of your chain. I originally used gold chain, but later opted for silver.

Cut a strip of tulle or sheer fabric for your pompom. Mine was about 3" wide and 3' long (thrifted from some of my sister's old dress-up clothes!), and my pompom turned out larger than the one on Anthropologie's necklace . Cut a piece of ribbon with the same length as your fabric, and place the ribbon on top of the fabric.

Find or create a piece of cardstock that is about 2.5"x4" or so. Lay your necklace chain across the card, then wrap the fabric and ribbon around the card. Tightly tie the fabric by placing the thicker wire next to your necklace chain, sliding out the card, and pulling the fabric up like a bow. Twist the ends of the wire together, and cut off the excess. Carefully cut up the sides of your fabric, and fluff out the fabric and ribbons until it suits your fancy. Cut the ends of the ribbons at angles, and enjoy your new necklace! You could also add textured yarn to your pompom, a button center, sparkles, or other accents- the possibilities are endless!
