They say the best ideas happen by mistake, well that's true.  I was in a  rush for a last minute holiday party for which I had decided to wear a very appropriate simple floor lenght red velvet dress I had wore to my son's wedding.  I knew the dress was clean and did not try it on until the day of the party and at which time I realized I had finally lost a little weight and the dress really needed to be taken in.  I had sewn on velvet before and found it to be quite a hassel, and I didn't have time for a hassel.  I hurriedly reached by sewing machine after putting a few pins down the long side seam of the dress.  Lo and Behold the machine had my quilting walking foot on and I just didn't have time to care, so I sewed away.  To my surprise it was magic, pure magic.  The seam was perfect, no shifting of sides, no puckering, no nothing; just a perfect seam from underarm to floor lenght hem.  The second side, I didn't even pin.  I have used this walking foot on other velvet projects, like Christmas stockings etc.  You really must try this, it will make you not run from sewing on velvet.
